Hurricane Sandy Hits Land Monday

A beast of a storm slammed into the east coast Monday evening, with wind and storm surges causing legendary flooding. Coastal communities were hard hit; inland cities and towns were not without damage. Hurricane Sandy knocked down trees, and power outages left more than 100,000 without power in one area of the eastern seaboard alone. Hurricane Sandy left over 8 inches of rain in some areas, and put mass transportation at a standstill.

Record Rainfall And Winds Still Present From Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy made landfall around 8pm, with the center hitting just outside of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Winds were sustained at 80 mph plus, and gusting to over 90. The storm was heading to the north and northwest at just 23 mph, leaving massive amounts of both rain and snow in its wake. Hurricane Sandy was soon updated to a post tropical cyclone. Extensive evacuations turned many cities and towns into ghost towns. All flights were cancelled and the majority of bridges and overpasses were closed. Only a few brave, and emergency personnel stayed behind to face Hurricane Sandy and her might.
